AKC Dog Groups

Dogs come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and behaviors but given the combination of these traits, dog can be placed into a breed category called a group. Here are 4 of the AKC's dog groups.



Sporting:

Sporting dogs are those bred to help assist hunters with the identification and retrieval of game. These are hardy dogs with weather resistant coats that love the outdoors. Popular sporting dog breeds are Labrador Retrievers and German Shorthair Pointers.



Working:

Working Dogs are some of the oldest dog breeds on earth and we’re bred to assist humans with a particular task. Working dogs can help to guard livestock or even people and property. Popular working dog breeds are the Rottweiler and Great Dane.



Herding:

Herding Dogs are those bred to assist Shepherds with moving livestock like sheep or cattle. These dogs are typically highly intelligent and extremely athletic. Popular herding dog breeds are the Border Collie and Australian Shepard.



Toy:

Toy Dogs are those bred to be the perfect human companion. These dogs love attention and being close to their humans. They’re typically smaller breeds <20lbs and don’t require an enormous amount of exercise. Popular toy dog breeds are the Pug and Shih Tzu.
