4 Most Popular Dog Sports

Dog sports can help keep active dogs healthy both physically and mentally! There are plenty of options when it comes to dog sports and recreation.

In this post we are going to share the 4 most popular dog sports!

1. Weight Pull

Weight pulling is a highly competitive dog sport in which dogs are trained to pull a sled or cart loaded with heavy weights. Dogs are attached to the sled or cart by a harness that helps to mitigate the effects of the weight on their bodies as they pull. The dog that pulls the most weight over a set distance wins.

2. Flyball

Flyball is a competitive team port in which dogs compete to retrieve a ball and return to their owners in a relay race format. Dogs run across a field, grab a ball from a dispenser, and then run back to their owners as quickly as possible. The first team to have all their members across the line wins.

3. Agility

Agility events are designed to test a dog's obedience as well as their overall fitness. Dogs are coached by their owners to follow a set track around a course filled with jumps, ramps, tunnels and more. The dog to complete the course the fastest with the least number of mistakes wins.

4. Schutzhund

Schutzhund is a dog sport that focuses on protection training in guard dogs. Dogs are given a series of challenges that mimic real world situations in which guard dogs must find a decoy, alert their owner, and then engage in bite-work against a decoy in a sleeve.

Dog sports are a great way to bond with your pet and get you outside as well!

Be sure to have your dog checked out by your veterinarian before getting started, and get them groomed regularly so they feel their best.
