4 Different Coat Types

Dogs come in all manner of shapes and sizes, with coats equally as unique. Here are the four major types of coat types in dogs:

Hairless

While many dogs can be identified by their beautiful coats, some dogs can also be identified by their lack of coats. Dogs like the American Hairless Terrier, Peruvian Inca Orchid, or the Xoloitzcuintli are not born with traditional coats.

Short Hair:

Many bully and hound type breeds have lower maintenance, shorter coats, that make them great for people with allergies. These coats translate well to warmer environments and often necessitate the use of outerwear in colder climates.

Medium Hair:

Labradors, Australian Shepherds, and Border Collies often have medium coats, roughly between 1-2’’ long. These coats offer a middle ground between high maintenance and maximum floof and are found on a majority of dog breeds.

Long Hair:

Afghan Hounds, English Setters, and Lhasa Apsos all feature long beautiful coats that require immense amounts of work to keep clean. Longer Coated dogs typically require far more work than short or even medium coat dogs and require regular work to keep them looking their best.
